How to Achieve a Band Award

The Band awards program is designed to reward service to the band and community through a points program combined with a community service requirement.  It is our belief that the students have the ability and responsibility to make a significant contribution to the community through the sharing of their musical talents.

Each award is worth a total of 10 points.  The sequence of awards is:

  • Letter

Awards System
Students use their accrued points to earn band awards.  Once these points are used for an award, they are deducted from the total.  Unused points carry over from one year to the next.  Students may earn two awards in one year if they accrue enough points.

Community Service Component

Students must perform 8 hours of community service in conjunction with the awards system.  This community service must be musical in nature.  Examples include, but are not limited to, tutoring a young musician on his/her instrument, playing in a church/temple/synagogue, playing in a nursing home or pre-school, helping an elementary/middle school band director with a concert/library/rehearsal/event.  All community service activities must be pre-approved by the director and supporting materials, i.e. signatures, programs, letters, etc., must be submitted to support and verifiy the service. A Community Service Verification Sheet must be submitted with the Awards Point Tally Sheet.

Student Responsibility
It is the responsiblity of the student to submit all required paperwork, Awards Point Tally Sheet, by the established deadline of May 1Failure to do so, regardless of the number of points accrued, will preclude the student from receiving an award at the band banquet.  All community service must be completed and supporting material submitted by this date.  This is the responsibility of the student, not the directors.
