| Marching Band Competition/Contest |
Typically four Saturdays in September and October when Marching Band travels to a high school and performs in a competitive environment. These competitive performances are in preparation for States --- great entertainment! |
| Color Guard |
Auxiliary performers in the Marching Band field show who use props such as flags, sabres, or rifles, along with movement, to express dynamic passages in the music. Color Guard is a vital part of the field show and a requirement for competition. |
| Concert I, II |
Increasing difficulty levels of Concert Band; II is the starting level |
| Drumline |
Percussionists who march in the "battery" on the field or play in the "front pit" during the Marching Band show. |
| Festival |
Performances, typically in March, where concert and symphonic bands are graded by judges. Receiving a Superior rating for symphonic band is one condition for receiving Virginia Honor Band designation. Also see Honor Band and States. |
| Honor Band |
A designation established by the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association (VBODA) to categorize high school music education programs where marching band has received a Superior rating at States and Symphonic Band has received a Superior rating at Festival. |
| Pit or Front Pit |
A section of the Marching Band Drumline who perform on marimba, tympani, xylophone, vibraphone, and auxiliary instruments requiring mobile platforms (affectionately known as Pit Trailers) towed by a golf cart to enter and exit the football field during the Marching Band performance. |
| Pit Crew |
Parent volunteers who assist Pit with getting its instruments on and off the football field for Marching Band performances. |
| Pit Orchestra |
Springtime opportunity for the band and orchestra to play together in the annual OHS musical. |
| Spring Trip |
Myrtle Beach, Orlando, or Nashville etc--- competitive performances by Symphonic Band, all Concert Bands, all Jazz Bands, Guard and Drumline. |
| States |

| Student Account Points |
Nonmonetary awards given to students for participating in fundraising activities – Citrus Sales, Food Gift Cards, GL Scrip and Tag Day. The points may be applied to reduce student account balances. |
| Superior |
The score OHS must receive in both Marching Band (fall) and Symphonic Band (winter) in order to be designated a Virginia Honor Band. |
| Symphonic Band |
The highest level band in our program. The performance of the Symphonic Band during the spring festival helps to determine the honor band status of the entire band program. |
| Tag Day |
A significant fundraiser for BBOHS and for accumulation of Student Account Points. This fundraiser occurs in September. All band members --- marching band, concert bands, symphonic band, and guard --- go door-to-door in the neighborhoods where we live requesting donations. |
| Winter Guard |
The guard competitions that occur after the Marching session. |
