Cougar Marching Band Competition Information
The Marching Cougars participate in weekly competitions to prepare for the VBODA State Marching Festival (States). The competitions are always on Saturdays in the month of October and students should not plan any activities on competition days as departure and performance times vary from week to week. The schedule is posted at the beginning of each week.
Getting Ready for Competitions
- Make sure student has had a good night’s sleep
- Check e-mail and website for any updates to the uniform or the day’s schedule
- Make sure the student has all items needed - all uniform parts/instruments not already at school (black marching shoes, black socks-above ankle, instrument)
- Send money for lunch and/or dinner - make sure money is not packed away but is with the student
- Remind students to wear “changeable” clothing which they will wear under their uniforms - (black t-shirt (UnderArmour works well because it is fitted) shorts not too long or baggy
- Make sure student arrives in the band room at the assigned time - at this time the students will hear about the day’s events, schedule and begin rehearsal
Parent Volunteers for Marching Competitions
Help is always needed to chaperone these trips and help with the pit crew. If you want to help, please fill out the volunteer form or contact Kerin Braudaway. Your participation is vital to the success of the Marching Cougars!
Volunteers generally arrive one hour before we expect the buses to arrive - you will be notified the week of the competition as to your arrival time.Learn more about chaperone and pit duties>>
Spectators
Parents are encouraged to attend these performances and cheer on the band - your students need your support! Check the website or e-mails for competition time.
- Travel on your own and arrive earlier than our competition time because once a high school performance begins you will not be allowed to enter the stands.
- Expect gate prices, program and concession sales - support the high schools hosting the competitions!
- Cheer loudly for Oakton - sit together if possible for a combined show of force - wear spiritwear!
After the Competition
Parents waiting to pick up students please note: All students are required to stay until equipment is unloaded and returned to its proper location and the band room is clean and set up for class. ALL drumline students are to assist the return of the pit equipment to the upper seatrain. These activities take time. Offers of help from extra parents are always welcome!
